With a new Tablet released every week, the table market is a cacophony of colors, makes, sizes and features. Therefore, there are the iPads, Androids and the also ran WebOS-TouchPads. The sheer number of Tablets available is rather confusing to the average buyer, looking for multi-purpose features in Tablets. Soon, Sony the master of electronic gadgetry is to offer two distinct Tablets based on the android platform. While Tablet S (nee Tablet S1) is a state-of-art slate with a wedge edge Tablet, the next is a superbly stylish clam-shaped Tablet called the Tablet P (nee Tablet S2). Here is a quick preview of Tablet P, a double-screen Tablet, which could soon be your fashion accessory doubling as a Tablet. Running on an Android 3.0 in the pre-production Tablet P, the final clam-shaped Tablet is to launch in November with the Android 3.2. The most eye-catching feature with Tablet P is that it simply, opens out and closes, much like a spectacle case. It opens out into a 5.5inch twin screen, giving the impression of a full-fledged Tablet screen real estate. However, there is no escaping the hinge at the centre, which kind-of cuts of the continuity of images especially in the portrait-perspective. As a step-in eReader, the dual-screen gives the familiar feel of an open book. Where these screens truly make a difference is their fabulous resolution for such as small screen space-1024 x 960 pixels, backed by Sony’s proprietary TruBlack technology, which takes away the glare. However, as with all other Tablets, Tablet S too, becomes illegible in direct light/sunlight. Sony’s Reader app is now available for Tablet P as well but the display quality does not match that of eInk, Amazon’s default display on its open source Kindle eReader device. It is available in 4GB storage, USB extension and 3G is default unlike other Tablets. The dual-screen model is reminiscent of the Nintendo 3D S, the blockbuster Sony gaming console. The Tablet P too has the same grip and fast-paced typing using thumbs and is also certified for PlayStation and is likely to offer PS’s older game titles. This is where the dual screen comes into play. The keyboard or the controls will appear on the bottom screen, while the top screen continues to display the images or webpage. The touch-sensitive technology works wonders with high-quality response but does not suffice for serious gamers who need the feel of physical controls. Apps for Tablet P will truly be lacking on two counts. First, the dual-screen display requires new, niche apps, with appropriate changes, as the most of the regular apps will not be able to deliver effectively on the split-screen display. As with all other Sony entertainment devices, the Tablet P too is integrated via DLNA technology. However, connectivity is rather limited because of the Micro-USB connection. Another feature lacking is the Universal remote, which comes with Tablet S. In the Tablet S, practically all devices can be controlled using the RI.
